A Hero Among Us


He's your next door neighbor or maybe a friend

Someone, when needed, you can always depend

But when people are in trying times and have a desperate need

He is always there, for he's a firefighter, a very unique breed.

For he is tough, like a tiger in a cage

To tackle the flames, wherever they may rage

But he also knows that families many times are torn apart

So he consoles them with his kind and gentle heart

He helps at all times of day, and never leaves his post

Because he knows that someone needs him the most

When you talk to him he says it is no big deal

Because he was helping others and missed another meal

Or how he missed time to be with loved ones,

His wife, daughter and two young sons

But he is courageous, never wanting to fall

Even though his family worries this might be his last call

And even in extreme danger, you will never see him sigh

For this is his last call, his final good-bye

Although he is gone, it has been quite a while

You can still see him saying he was a firefighter with a proud smile

So he was our next door neighbor, a friend and thus

He will always be remembered, as A Hero Among Us.
